Since day one I’ve had it active James but it does not seem to work with any predictable degree of certainty. Spam is not a big deal. Bogus registrations are and those, thankfully, have fallen off sharply since I turned off the creation of blogs.

Possibility James, but … not all regular WP themes are compatible with WPMU & BP. When more people start using and posting to their blogs (59 registered here now but only 13 blogs in use – and many are still at default message), this could happen.
