First Day Access Hiccups
August 23, 2009 in About this site by Stephen Oliver
To all those individuals who tried to log on and register mid to late Saturday evening (last night), you may have experienced inordinate page load times or you might not even have been able to access this site. There were several network issues at the host provider end (beyond their control or ability to fix) that caused the delays. I have been assured that all is well now (crossing fingers) and I hope to see even more registrations made today. Thanks for your patience as we work through these matters.
Guess time difference can have its benefits — I did it Saturday night Japan time. Anyway, one question… I know we’re not trying to be like Facebook or anything, but is there any way that we can be notified in our own feeds as to posts made on our posts/comments, etc.? It’s going to be hard to sift through the site-wide activity feed. For example, I didn’t know Mr. Lippincott joined and posted the writing group until I looked at the site-wide activity list, and that’s going to be massive once a lot more people join (which I believe they will). If this is already an option, I apologize for wasting your time.
I’m not 100% sure what you are asking above but … as the Group’s Admin, you have the ability to turn on email notices when changes are made to the Wire. Go to your Group, select Admin, and at the very bottom check “Yes” for Notify group members of changes. This creates more back-end load with the emails but perhaps does what you want as far as Groups are concerned. I hope this answers your question. Right now, as you know, there are no RSS feeds from Group wires.
Thanks, Mr. O. I noticed the email notice option you mentioned, but what I was referring to (sorry I didn’t spell it out better) is notices on all your actions on the site. For example, in Facebook, if I write something on Mr. O’s post, then someone else does too, I get a notice saying someone else posted on your wall, etc. So if I were to comment on someone’s blog here and they reply, will I get a notification or do I have to check their blog entries again? I realize the site just started, and I may be jumping the gun, but just wanted to ask. I already noticed that you get notifications of certain requests, confirmations, etc.
Perhaps a concrete example of what I’m talking about is that I didn’t notice you replied to my message until I scrolled down the site-wide activity.
OK, now I understand you. You are quite right with your understanding that you will NOT get an update re the above conditions. Sorry. BuddyPress is, after all, only at v1.0.3. Status updates and better feeds are promised for future versions. I guess, for now at least, you’ll have to visit and explore here more often to see your “impact”.
